Ways Water Can Enter a Basement or Crawl Space
When we think about water getting into our basements or crawl spaces, the first thing that comes to mind is rain. Lots and lots of rain. Maybe flooding from a nearby river or lake or pond. These are probably the most severe ways we get water inside our homes.
There are more subtle ways water comes inside. Ways we don’t really pay attention to until it becomes a serious problem we can no longer ignore. We’ve put together a list on all the ways water invades our basements and crawl spaces.
Water vapor from the soil.
Humidity coming in through the vents.
Gutters and downspouts.
No sump pump or pump not working.
Cracks or gaps in the foundation.
Landscaping around the foundation not sloping away from the house.
Leaking pipes.
Plumbing issues.
If you are not in the habit of checking your crawl space, it’s best to do so at least twice a year. Make it part of your Spring or Fall cleaning.
