Mold in your basement or crawl space?
What to do about mold in your basement or crawl space?
The most common reasons why homeowners call us to inspect their basement is standing water, musty odors or they see moisture on walls after a rain. Sometimes, you don’t even know where the water came from or how it got into your basement or crawl space. What we always hear from homeowners - it starts causing more significant issues if left untreated. One of them is mold.
Feeling sneezy?
Mold under your house should be taken seriously. Moisture and humidity are a perfect basis for mold growth. Mold easily spreads around the joists, eats them, and causes damage over time, but also releases unhealthy components into the air, which cause allergies. Due to the stack effect, about 50% of air travels from the crawl space or basement to the area above, where we live and breathe these components in. You may not be aware that moldy basements and crawl spaces cause allergies, and you can suffer from them for many years before you think of searching for mold. Especially if it’s hiding under your house!
Keep water away!
To save a moldy basement, you need to eliminate water and moisture first. Then, we use a material called CleanSpace, which creates a vapor barrier on the walls. Water entering the basement is collected with the WaterGuard – a system of pipes designed not to clog and to collect each drop of water that gets in the basement or crawl space. This system leads water to the TripleSafe sump pump, which pumps water out of the basement. The sump pump has a backup - if something goes wrong – for example, the pump is too full due to an extreme volume of water, the alarm goes off. In this case, the secondary pump starts working and saves the day. During floods, the IceGuard, which is installed on the outside wall, helps to dispose of water too.
Mold issues? You need a dehumidifier!
The last, but very important step that can’t be forgotten when addressing mold problems, is adding a dehumidifier. Our SaniDry Sedona dehumidifiers control levels of humidity in the environment. When the air reaches 55% humidity level, it automatically turns on and extracts excess moisture from the air. It helps to reduce the growth of mold and mildew and improves indoor air quality.
Mold is a serious problem. Mold spores are always present in the air and they love organic materials (wood), and moist environment, because it provides perfect conditions for growing. With our solution your basement can be mold-free again! Say no to allergies and yes to a new, healthy basement!
