Problematic Entry Point
The crawl space entry is a critical factor in maintaining a healthy home, and this one wasn't up to the task. The wooden door lacked an airtight seal, allowing moisture and pests easy access. The access well around the entry also collected water, creating an even greater risk of water intrusion.
Ineffective Barrier
Upon arrival, we found a thin, DIY vapor barrier in place. While well-intentioned, this kind of barrier is too weak to effectively stop moisture. Instead, it traps water, allowing humidity to build up in the crawl space and contributing to poor air quality.
High Humidity Levels
Our inspection revealed a relative humidity of 65.98%-well above the 55% threshold where mold and mildew thrive. High humidity damages the crawl space and negatively impacts the air circulating throughout the home.
Installing Drainage Matting
After removing debris, we laid drainage matting along the crawl space floor. This essential layer prevents water from becoming trapped beneath the vapor barrier, directing it to the drainage system and keeping the area dry.
CleanSpace Vapor Barrier
The CleanSpace vapor barrier was the star of the encapsulation. Its bright white finish and 20-mil-thick, seven-layer construction provide durable, long-term protection. It's also resistant to tears and punctures, making it the perfect solution for keeping moisture out.
SaniDry Sedona Dehumidifier
To maintain ideal humidity levels, we installed the SaniDry Sedona Dehumidifier. This compact yet powerful unit keeps the crawl space below 55% relative humidity while helping lower energy costs.
Upgrading the Access Well
We dug out the existing access well and removed the ineffective cover. A poorly designed access well can be a significant source of water entry, so this upgrade was an essential step to protect the crawl space.
Turtl Access System
Finally, we installed the Turtl Access System, a durable, sealed solution that protects the entry point. It prevents water, debris, and pests from entering the crawl space while offering a clean and secure way to access the area. With this final touch, the encapsulation was complete, and the homeowner can now enjoy a healthier, more stable home!
