Drainage System Installation at The Columns
Challenge
As Bowling Green, Kentucky continues to grow, some are finding creative ways to meet the housing demand. The Columns is a unique, multi-level complex of apartments and lofts that have been converted from an historic high school built in 1908. The developers left the front of the building as it was in its prime and left the units as original as possible, including the original hardwood floors. The size and scope of the job were the real issues as The Columns totals 111 units. As you can imagine, there were many old mechanical pipes in the basement and under the concrete floor that were desperate for repair. The basement also had problems with leaking through the walls. This can be hazardous as water and moister can lead to mold and other health issues. Other obstacles that our team faced included an elevator pit, an elevated entry way, and our system had to be positioned around the old pipes or else they would have to be removed prior to installation.
Solution
The Columns chose our WaterGuard system along with the SuperSump and UltraSump systems to keep this space dry. The project took the team a total of four days to complete, using 385 feet of WaterGuard along the inside parameter of the basement. This solution captures the water at the point of entry, the floor and wall joints, and directs the the water to the sump pumps. The water is then pumped out of the building and directed away from the property all while designed never to clog. This required the team to jackhammer the 385 feet parameter, lay the WaterGuard system, and install two separate pumps systems with drainage pipes. Now, the people of The Columns can rest assured that what's below them will be dry and healthier. Instead of wasted space, the 255 tenants now enjoy a commons area and gym.
