Healthy Crawl Space in Chapmansboro TN
Challenge
A family purchased a small ranch home in Chapmansboro Tennessee excited to have a smaller home and a lot more land. The property had been vacant for a couple years and had only had a few minor improvements before listing it on the market.
Once in the home, there was an unidentified odor that was not very welcoming and did not go away as they got settled into their new home.
The home still has the original hardwood floors but they were soft in some areas and the floors were cold in the winter.
Underneath the home had soiled and sagging insulation, standing water, and softened shims.
Ductwork from the HVAC system was breathing in this nasty air and feeding it through the rest of the home above.
Everyone in the home also suffered from allergies, the daughter allergic to dust mites, proper humidity control was a must.
Solution
First thing first! Clean out the nasty stuff.
Remove Insulation from Joists and any other debris that was hanging out down there.
Get to work!
Prepare the area make sure the low and muddy areas are regraded.
TerraBlock was used to insulate the crawl space floor under the CleanSpace. TerraBlock is a 3/4" flexible, foam insulation with a vapor barrier on both sides. It adds R-value, puncture resistance, and dreamy padding for your knees. TerraBlock is ideal for those who want to save the most on their energy costs.
The crew rolled out 1170 sq ft of CleanSpace Drainage Matting. The matting is a harder dimpled plastic that allows for groundwater to drain as necessary while providing additional comfort and protection for the vapor barrier to be laid on top.
The CleanSpace Liner is a 20 mil, 7 layers, with polyester cord reinforcement inside vapor barrier. CleanSpace has antimicrobial additive manufacture in the material, which prevents mold growth on the liner, odorless and safe.
SaniDry Sedona Dehumidifier. The dehumidifier controls the moisture in the home. Protecting the crawl space from humidity helps with allergies, smells, and bouncy floors. With no water leaks and dry air, materials stay dry! No smell, no mold, no wood rot.
Insulation & Sealing. Filling the spaces between the sill plate, the top of the foundation, openings around wires and pipes leading to the outside, or any other openings that allowed outside air leakage into the crawl space.
2" SilverGlo Insulated Panels and ZypFoam spray foam insulation help keep outside air out! to save as much energy as possible SilverGlo is a foam insulation board installed on the crawl space walls. the panels have tiny graphite particles, these tiny particles reflect heat and lower the material's conductivity for superior R-value per inch. It also acts as a radiant barrier, which reflects heat back into the crawl space.
To close it all off a 2.5X4 Small Everlast crawl space door is installed to create a tight seal. An all-plastic non-organic material that will not rot, warp, need paint, bugs won't eat it. A snug-fitting door stops air and moisture from getting in the crawl space.
