The sump pump pumps water outside of the basement, where the water escapes through drainage pipes. The outlet is at least 10 feet away from the house. What you see in this photo is called IceGuard - it kicks in when there is too much water or ice present and serves as an additional support to the TripleSafe sump pump. It ensures the system can successfully pump out water even during extremely high volumes for example during a flood.
